The parishioners of Desertserges, Murragh, Kilmeen and Kinneigh would like to extend a warm West Cork welcome to our new Rector, Rev. Stella Jones. We look forward to getting to know her and making the Union a true new home for her.

It is with gratitude and a tinge of sadness that we also express our sincerest thanks to Rev. Peter Hanna who has done an absolutely outstanding job during the vacancy period and left his own unique mark on the Union in that timee. His dedicated contribution over 12 months will be gratefully remembered by the people of the Union as it passes in good health to Rev. Jones.

As we approach Christmas and the turn of the year, it is time to reflect on the change in the Union and to look to the future.

In January 2009, the Rev. Judith Hubbard-Jones, who left her distinct mark on he Union, returned to England, to continue her ministry in a new parish and be near her elderly mother. Sadly her experience in her new parish did not turn out as she expected and she has taken the decision to retire from ministry with effect from the end of the year. She remains fondly in the hearts and memories of the parishioners of this Union, and we continue to remember and pray for her.

And then, afer a 9-month vacancy period, the bishop announced his appointment of the Rev. Stella Jones as Judith’s successor. Stella, who will be instituted on 14th January 2010 writes of herself:

“I was born in Dublin, one of five siblings. I went to school in Sutton Park and then headed for Scotland where I trained as a nurse. I was married for 29 years and during that time I lived in Scotland, Cork, Saudi Arabia and then back in Dublin. While living in Jeddah, I taught French to expatriate workers and directed and produced amateur dramatics. Back in Dublin I worked at my old school as matron in charge of all foreign students. I was also in charge of the student’s spiritual welfare, which is how I got into ministry in the first place. As a very active parishioner in Howth Parish, I eventually applied to the Church of Ireland Theological College and went on to read Theology in Trinity. I served as curate assistant in Bandon Union of Parishes from 2002 to 2005 and then moved to the dioceses of Ossory, as Rector of Clonenagh Group of Parishes to the present day.

Because of my experience of moving from one country to the other, I am very interested in things intercultural and especially Interfaith Dialogue and am at present working on starting a branch of the World Congress of Faith here in Ireland. My two grown up daughters work in the medical field, one in Kabul in Afghanistan and one in Kilmacanogue in County Wicklow. As both of the them have very fond memories of their primary school days in Cork, the Cork School of Ballet and learning about the visual arts in Crawford Art Gallery, they are delighted that their Mum is returning to God’s own Dioceses!”

For my own part, I will have been with you for just twelve months by the time Rev. Stella is instituted. It has been a privilege to share in the life of the Kinneigh Union in so many ways. As Priest-in-Charge during the vacancy my tasks has not been to run the Union as if I were a full-time resident Rector, but to ensure that its essential life continue to be maintained. My priority, which indeed is the priority of any Parish, is to maintain the liturgical pattern and provide pastoral care. In other words to ensure worship remains central and that those in need of spiritual care are not neglected. But my task would not have been possible without the support and involvement of you, the people who make up the Church in this place. As I have said more than once, clergy come and go, but for you this remains your Parish and its future, with the help of God, lies in your hands.

“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfil the law of Christ”

Gal. 6.2

We live in a time of great trying. If we had any doubts about climate change, the incessant rain and consequent disastrous flooding are clear evidence that weather patterns have altered dramatically. Equally dramatic and of more long term harm to many is the the downturn in our country’s economy, resulting in thousands of job losses and a reduction in the standard of living of most people. The release of the Murphy report on clerical child abuse in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Dublin confirmed what we feared, that not alone were many, many young people horribly abused, the abusers were given protection by the highest authorities in that Church with evidence of connivance by State bodies. Sadly, we have not heard the end of this as the report on the Cloyne Diocese has yet to be produced and there may be other revelations to come.

Those directly suffering from these events need to feel they are supported by those who have escaped with minor difficulties. We have see evidence of this support in many ways, particularly in the generous outpouring of help towards those who have had their homes and livelihoods so badly affected by flooding.

But in all this there is a growing sense that we have behaved badly in recent decades, despoiling our environment, showing selfish greed in the Celtic Tiger years and allowing abuse of the vulnerable to remain hidden. Advent is a time of penitential preparation for the celebration of Christmas. Let us use it as it should be used, not as a time of self-indulgence and overspending, but as a time of serious soul-searching and repentance leading to a renewed commitment to Christ and his teaching so that we can with clean hearts celebrate the anniversary of his birth and at the same time prepare ourselves for his second and final coming.

The future, as always, lies in God’s hands. May he bless all you strive to do in his name for the benefit of the Church and the building up of the people in this place. I wish you, your families and friends every blessing at this Chistmastide and into the New Year.

Peter T Hanna – Priest in Charge

Parish Vacancies in the Dioceses

There have been more clerical movements in Cork, Cloyne and Ross this year than for many years before. First, Templebreedy (Crosshaven and Nohoval) became vacant when Rev. Daniel Nuzum took on full time hospital chaplaincy in the city. Then this Parish needed a new Rector following the departure of Rev. Judith (see above). This was followed by Kilgariffe (Clonakilty etc.) becoming vacant when Rev. Ian Jonas moved to Carrigrohane to fill the existing vacancy there. The Rev. Daniel Owen filled Kilgariffe by moving from Cobh and Glanmire – creating a vacancy in that Union. Ballydehob needed a new Rector when Rev. Paul Draper departed to Lismore Cathedral and the Youghal on the resignation of Rev. Michael Thompson.

As matters stand – at the time of writing – Kinneigh has seen the appointment of the Rev. Stella Jones, Ballydehob the appointment of the Rev. Stephen McCann and most recently the Rev. Isobel Jackson has been appointed to Templebreedy. This leaves vacancies in Youghal Union and Cobh and Glanmire Union. Please keep all these parishes in your prayers as new Rectors settle in to some whilst others continue to seek new pastors.

Births, Marriages and Deaths

Over the year it has been my privilege and joy to preside at three Baptisms – all in Kilmeen – Niamh Bennett, Noah Mortell and Anna O’Halloran, and to share in one wedding – David Beattie to Eileen O’Driscoll. To these new members of the Church and to the newly weds we offer our congratulations and prayers for their future.

There was one funeral, that of Major McCall at Desertserges and we offer our sympathy to his daughter, Sarah Gornall who lives in Kilcolman Rectory.

Confirmation

The recent confirmation of 10 young people was one the highlights of the year with St. Mary’s, Desertserges absolutely packed with families, friends and parishioners. Please continue to encourage those who made their commitment on 15th Novemeber 2009 – Mark Kingston, David Buttimer, Alvin Shorten, David Deane, Michelle Shorten, Alyson Shorten, Evan Shorten, Andrea Moore, Evelyn Deane and Edward Shorten.

Holy Communion for the Housebound

Over the coming weeks I will endeavour to bring Holy Communion to those who will be unable to get to church over Christmas. Whilst I have a list of “regulars” there may be others – perhaps family members on visits or parishioners recovering from hospital stays – who would like to receive at home. Please contact me at church or at home. Tel. 021 4775470 email:- hanna7@gofree.indigo.ie.

This Sunday in the UK is Remembrance Sunday, and in a timely coincidence a genealogy site has released searchable records for Ireland’s casualties. I’m sure I’ll have missed some records, but I did find a number of locally-born men who lost their lives in France and Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq):

- John Crowley (Murragh)– 15 Nov 1914 – Flanders & France – Royal Garrison Artillery, Killed in Action

- Patrick McCarthy (Ballineen) – 18 May 1915 – Flanders & France – Royal Engineers, 55th Field Company, Died of Wounds. Part of the 7th Division, the 55th Field Company was engaged in warfare at Ypres (19 Oct – 22 Nov 1914), Langemarck (21-24 Oct 1914), Gheluvelt (29-31 Oct 1914), Neuve Chapelle (10-13 Mar 1915), Ypres (22 Apr – 25 May 1915). It seems that during this second battle at Ypres that Patrick McCarthy was killed. The second battle of Ypres is infamous for the first use of poison gas on a large scale by the Germans.

- Jeremiah Daly (Ballineen) -28 Jun 1916 – Irish Guards, 1st Batt, Killed in Action

- Cornelius Spillane (Ballineen) – 27 Jul 1916, Flanders & France – Royal Munster Fusiliers 8th Batt, Killed in Action. In July 1916, 8RMF was taking part in several raids along the Loos sector (northern France near the border with Belgium) with its brigade, suffering significant losses, often the battalion’s best soldiers.

- John Driscoll (Ballineen) – 22 Aug 1916 – Mesopotamia – Connaught Rangers 1st Batt. On 26 Sept 1914 the 1st battalion of the Connaught Rangers arrived at the Port of Marseilles having embarked at Karachi in India in August. It saw action on the Western Front at the 1st Battle of Messines ( Oct 1914), Battle of Festuber (Nov 1914), Battle of Neuve Chapelle (March 1915), 2nd Battle of Ypres (April 1915), and the Battle of Loos (Sept 1915). On 11 Dec, 1915 the 1st Battalion returned to Marseilles and left for Mesopotamia. On 10 January 1916 it disembarked at Basra and proceeded up the Tigris to Kut. The attempt to relieve the Turkish-besieged British force at Kut failed with heavy losses during early 1916, and on 28th April 1916 the garrison at Kut surrendered. During the summer of 1916 the Connaught Rangers in the lines at Kut were decimated by cholera. It is not clear if this was the cause of John Driscoll’s death.

- George Taylor (Ballineen) – 9 Sep 1916 – Flanders & France – Royal Munster Fusiliers 8th Batt, Killed In Action. 8RMF was transfered from Loos (see Cornelius Spillane above) to the Battle of the Somme on 30th August 1916, to the front at Guillemont and Ginchy. It was part of the assault which took Guillemont on 3rd September along with the Connaught Rangers. Later, after the initial attack on Ginchy failed, 8RMF was left open to a counter-attack, then withdrawn to recover from its losses. It returned on the 7th September with 200 men for the next attack on Ginchy. On 9th September it took heavy casualties – among them George Taylor, when it encountered stiff resistance from enemy defences unaffected by the allied bombardment whose shelling kept falling short into no-man’s land. The other battalions of the 16th (Irish) Division were left to capture Ginchy.

- James Brien (Murragh) – 26 Sep 1916 – Flanders & France – Irish Guards 1st Batt, Died of Wounds

- Robert Harman (Ballineen) – 10 Nov 1917 – Flanders & France – Royal Munster Fusiliers 2nd Batt, Killed in Action. 2RMF was one of two battalions which led the 1st Division’s attack at the Second Battle of Passchendaele on the 10th November 1917 – the last day of the battle. Weighed down with equipment they waded waist deep through the winter mud and water, initially taking all objectives within 45 minutes. Seeing the progress by the Canadians on the right they pressed on. The artillery support requested to break up the enemy landed on the battalion’s extended positions. The South Welch Borders advance had left a gap the Germans made use of to cut off most of the 2RMF. Three hours later saw only 7 officers and 240 other ranks present. 12 and 393 having become casualties. Robert Harman was one of the casualties.

- Daniel Horgan (Ballineen) – 5 Mar 1918 – Flanders & France – 2nd Royal Dublin Fusiliers, Killed in Action

- Michael Galvin (Newcestown)- 8 Oct 1918 – Flanders & France – Royal Irish Regiment, 2nd Batt, Killed in Action

Vacancy

Kinneigh Union has now been vacant since January this year, but you the parishioners seem in good heart. As I have said before, an occasional vacancy reminds parishioners that the present and future well being of the parish rests with you, for you are the parish. Rectors come and go, as do those who look after parishes during vacancies, but you, the people, have your roots here, you are here to stay. For my part it is a privilege to serve you for as long as it takes. You have been most friendly and supportive and I feel I have made many good friends. We are on a journey together, a pilgrimage seeking God’s presence in our lives. We continue to pray for the Bishop in his search for a new Rector conscious that there are three other parishes in the United Dioceses in the same situation, so please pray for them also – Ballydehob, Templebreedy and soon Cobh and Glanmire.

Confirmation

The picture at the top depicts Jesus blessing young people and comes from a recent Gospel reading. It is always a pleasure to see young people in church, even if from time to time they may cry out. As I said in a recent sermon isn’t it better to hear them in this way than not to hear them at all.

This leads on to the Bishop who has just announced that Confirmation will be held in the parish on Sunday 15th November in St. Mary’s, Desertserges. With this date in mind I intend to start preparation classes on Saturday 3rd October in the St. Paul Parish Centre, Ballineen at 11.00 and for no longer than an hour each week. I have sent a letter to each of the ten candidates who earlier in the year indicated they wished to confirm for themselves the promises made on their behalf at Baptism (to which a reply is required). This letter includes a church attendance form as part of the preparation as each of the candidates are asked to attend at least 4 separate services between now and the confirmation date. This is part of their preparation, and I would encourage parents to make sure their children understand its importance. I would ask everyone in the parish to encourage the candidates and to pray for them during the preparation period.

They are: – Evan Shorten, Michelle Shorten, Evelyn and David Deane, Mark Kingston, Andrea Moore, Edward Shorten, David Buttimer, Alvin Shorten and Alyson Shorten.

Over the next few weeks I hope to involve them in some small way in our churches – taking the collection, bringing forward the bread and wine at Communion, handing out books etc., again all part of the preparation.

Climate

There are two matters under this heading – the weather and the economic climate.

It has by all accounts, and proven by the records, to have been one of the worst summers for many years and one of worry for the farming community and by extension everyone who depends on the produce of the land – which includes us all! We can, however, give thanks for the recent dry and sunny spell, which has been a Godsend to those waiting to bring in fodder at the end of the harvesting season. Judging by the number of tractors and trailers I have met recently every opportunity has been used to take advantage of the fine spell.

The state of our economy and the measures being taken to correct the severe downturn in the country’s financial affairs have effected us all, some – particularly the growing number who have lost their jobs. I am particularly concerned about the effect this has had on those in developing countries who have been dependent on our continuing aid – just to stay alive. There has been no on going protest to our Government who over the past 12 months have slashed €145 million off our country’s aid budget. It behoves us, even within our own reduced circumstances, to continue giving to aid charities, which in the light of the above become ever more vital in the struggle to survive. Virtually all charities began because of the inadequacy of official aid to deal with human needs. Over the next few weeks envelopes for the Bishops’ Appeal will be available in the churches and I would ask that you be as generous as you can in your giving.

Sustentation

I have previously drawn attention to the necessity to ensure the sustentation is paid up to date and I do not wish to labour the point. As an auxiliary or non-stipendiary priest I am “neutral” as regards the parish finances, but I am concerned people may not be aware that a vacant parish cannot be filled if the payment of the assessment to the Dioceses is not up to date. As of now I understand there is a shortfall in giving of some €4,500. If you give to the sustentation and have not yet done so, please make your contribution to the Union Treasurer, Mrs. F. Stanley, as soon as possible.

Constitutional vote on the Lisbon Treaty

It was said that the vote was lost last year because so many people just couldn’t understand what the Lisbon Treaty was about so they listened to the opponents and voted “no”. On October 2nd we have another opportunity to vote and this time we cannot use the excuse that we haven’t been informed if the amount of mailing coming into my house is an indicator. Whilst I in no way want to “tell” you how to vote – that is your prerogative – it may be of some help to know that, as announced on the radio, the Church of Ireland along with the Methodist Church and the Society of Friends, is recommending a “yes” vote. The Roman Catholic Church in Ireland has said there is nothing in the Treaty that would prevent their people from voting either for or against.

Whatever way you decide please exercise the right you have to cast a vote. Every vote counts. Remember it was just by one vote in his favour that Hitler came to power in 1933.

Schools

There is real concern for the future of some of our national schools if the more draconian measures suggested in the McCarthy report are implemented by our government. Apart from suggesting an increase in the pupil/teacher ratio, which would mean teachers losing their posts as well as educational deficiencies, the most drastic suggestion is that schools with less than 50 pupils be closed and amalgamated. If carried out this would have a serious effect on the Church of Ireland as around the country a number of our rural schools have, at present, less than 50 pupils. Along with the suggested closure of more rural post offices and Garda stations this would have a negative effect on local communities who would lose a physical focus for social life. Where and when you can try and lobby local politicians and T.D’s, or write to the Minister for Education pointing out the importance of continuing to meet the real needs of our people by maintaining our schools.

Coming up

Harvest Thanksgiving: Whilst we have had our central service of Thanksgiving in Kilmeen, the services in Desertserges (October 4th), Kinneigh (October 18th) and Farranthomas (October 25th) will have a harvest theme.

Confirmation: This will be in St. Mary’s Desertserges on Sunday 15th November at 10.30 and will be the only service that day.

United Service: The next 5th Sunday is November 29th when the united service will be in Kinneigh at 10.30.

Christmas: This may seem far ahead but we plan to have Desertserges N S Christmas Service in Desertserges at 10.00 on December 6th and Ballymoney National School Christmas Service in Kilmeen on December 13th.

24th December
23:30 Desertserges Holy Communion

25th December
8:30 Kilmeen Holy Communion
10:00 Kinneigh Holy Communion
11:30 Farranthomas Holy Communion

27th December
10:30 Kilmeen United Service

Heavenly Father, through your Son Jesus Christ you have called the Church into being in order to bring the world to yourself, so we pray that we in this Parish may live and work and pray to this end. Give us renewed vision and kindle our hearts with love so that we may attempt new and greater things to your glory, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

The Bishop of Cork, Cloyne and Ross, Bishop Paul Colton, has announced the appointment of a new Canon in the Diocese. She is the Reverend Eithne Lynch who is also Rector of Kilmoe Union (Schull, Altar and Crookhaven) in West Cork. Canon Lynch will be Prebendary (Canon) of Desertmore and Killanully in Saint Fin Barre’s Cathedral, Cork and Prebendary of Timoleague in Saint Fachtna’s Cathedral, Ross. When the youngest member of her own family was starting college Canon Lynch herself started training for ordination at the Church of Ireland Theological College. She was ordained deacon in 1997 and priest in 1998. She served first as curate in Douglas and Frankfield, and was appointed Rector of Kilmoe in 2001. Canon Lynch brings wide experience and understanding of Cork to her new role. She attended Desertserges National School, Bandon Grammar and Cork Grammar Schools. She enjoyed farming life for 30 years and is well known among her clergy colleagues as someone who can drive (and fix) tractors, feed calves and do many other things on the farm! In Church life in the Diocese she is also a chaplain to the Bishop, the Diocesan Chaplain of the Mothers’ Union and Rural Dean of West Cork. She is also a member of the Diocesan Council and its Finance Committee. She serves on the General Synod of the Church of Ireland and is one of the voluntary directors on the boards of Saint Luke’s Home, the Lapps Charity and the St Stephen’s Protestant Orphan Society. Canon Lynch said: “I am greatly honoured to have been appointed Canon.” Canon Lynch, who is the eldest child of the late Canon Fred Garrett, is married to Richard, a farmer, and they have five children and six grandchildren.

Good News from today’s Irish Times: http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2009/0915/1224254555147.html

A Ferry link between Swansea in Wales and Cork is due to be resumed after a west Cork tourism co-operative completed the purchase of a Finnish vessel for €7.8 million. The Julia , which will operate under the Fastnet Line brand, will arrive in Cork in the coming weeks. West Cork Tourism began its campaign at the beginning of the year to raise €2.6 million to get the Swansea-Cork route resumed. Finnish bank Aktia Bank and its finance company Atkia Yritysrahoitus Oy have supported the acquisition through the provision of a mortgage of €6.3 million. The Julia , built in 1982, has sailed several routes in the Scandinavian peninsula. It has 10 decks, with a maximum capacity for 440 cars and 30 freight vehicles. The passenger capacity is 1,860. The Julia has restaurants and bars, a children’s play area, a cinema and more than 300 passenger cabins, making it particularly suited to the night crossing between Swansea and Cork. The ferry will commence service on the Cork-Swansea route in March. The company expects strong demand from tourist and freight customers. Fastnet Line believes the ship will contribute greatly to the development and promotion of tourism in Cork, Kerry and the surrounding areas, creating more than 500 jobs and bringing thousands of tourists to the region annually. It will also aid the development of Irish tourism into Wales. In addition, Fastnet Line will provide hauliers operating in Ireland and the UK with a viable sea crossing alternative for freight activity between the regions, potentially reducing round-trip road journeys by more than 600 kilometres. Additional funding of €2.5 million is now required to fund the business and to facilitate its development before and after the ferry’s launch in March. In that regard, there are now opportunities to invest both in the co-op and in Fastnet Line. The co-op will be arranging a series of roadshows in the area in the coming weeks to brief members and prospective new members on its plans. Conor Buckley, chairman of the co-operative, said he was looking to meet potential investors in the project. “The coming weeks and months will continue to be crucial to us to gain the working capital to aid the development of the organisation, so we are looking forward to meeting with potential investors from all over the southwest region and beyond.” Welcoming the news, Ieuan Wyn Jones, minister for the economy and transport in the Welsh Assembly, said the resumption of the ferry service would reinstate an important link between Wales and Ireland which had the potential to bring economic benefits to both countries. “Its value to Swansea in particular and to Wales in general is recognised from a trade and tourism perspective, and will also enhance our international links with Ireland.” The Swansea-Cork service last sailed in 2006.
