Aid Cancer Treatment

Frank and Valerie Jennings thank everyone most sincerely for supporting them in any way to make their Coffee Day, Open Garden and Vintage Display such a success. The magnificent sum of â‚¬7,550 was raised for the Cancer Care unit at Cork University Hospital.

Mothers' Union

The programme starts on Tuesday 16th September at 8.30pm with the MU Enrolling Service and Overseas Sale. Mothers' Union meets every third Tuesday of the month and is open to men and women. (You don't have to be a mother!)

Open Gardens Day

The Open Gardens Day at David and Mary Tanner's raised â‚¬3,570 for the Friends of St Mary's Desertserges. This was a magnificent sum considering it rained most of the time and that there were lots of other things going on the same day! Thank you to David and Mary and their helpers and for those who ran the raffle and kept an eye on the donations bucket at the entrance. If you haven't visited this remarkable garden at Glenview, Desertserges (signs from Murragh) â€¦â€¦please do. You won't be disappointed.

Pizza Making in the Rectory Garden

This year the annual â€˜BBQ' took on a more eco-friendly semi vegetarian look. A steep learning curve, we all learnt how different types of dough behave! Sturdy wholemeal does the best! Loose white sticky dough that flops between the fingers (hilarious!) also sticks to the pizza oven - but is really delicious nevertheless. Everyone was invited to put on their favourite toppings then watch the pizzas cook in the cob oven. Lots of delicious and inventive pizzas were created. People also brought along salads and desserts making a splendid meal. The weather was ideal - clear sky, warm and dry after a foul day of nearly continuous rain typical of our Great Irish Summer. Thank you to all who helped make this evening so worthwhile.

Thomas ReidmÃºller from The Hollies, our local centre for sustainable living, had (earlier in the year) organised a day's workshop on cob oven building. As The Hollies had plenty of ovens already and as they knew Judith (the rector) was really interested, they came and built one in the rectory garden. The oven is a simple earth, clay, sand and straw construction. It uses wood as fuel and once â€˜fired' up will retain heat for a very long time, without the need for extra fuel. It works like an old fashioned bread oven.

Works

Huge thanks to Ian Eady and Stephen O'Mahoney for professionally erecting steel mesh over windows at St Bartholomew's Church, Kinneigh. This church has sadly been a target for minor vandalism in recent years. It is also a wonderful place for very many visitors and foreign tourists who come to look at the unique Round Tower with its hexagonal base. We want to keep all our churches looking their best.

Scaffolding is now around St Mary's Desertserges and if the weather allows, work should be in full swing by the time you read this. More next month.

Sam Sebury

- after a valiant struggle after his recent leg amputation, Sam died on 24th July. Although housebound for a number of years Sam always kept a lively interest in the goings on in the Union and kept in touch with friends by telephone. He was a regular home communicant. Our best wishes to Kathleen his wife who survives him and is now living with Sam's niece Joy.

Loretta Willis (USA)

Members of Kilmeen Church will be sad to learn of the death of Loretta the new wife of Edmund Willis. We first knew Loretta as the very good friend of Edmund who with members of the Willis family came to Kilmeen on the various â€˜family history trips.' Loretta and Edmund both in older years, and with adult children, had only been married two years. Our sympathies to Edmund and the family in their loss.
