Rector’s Communication – August 2023

As we begin this new academic year after our summer break, may we be encouraged to pause for a moment and give thanks to God, if we haven’t already done so, for all His blessings to us and our loved ones.

  • For the many things we often take for granted such as our health, safety and wellbeing;
  • For all our achievements in the last academic year;
  • For the excitement and anticipation of new beginnings, especially for those who would be starting Primary and Secondary school as well as those entering institutions of further education;
  • For being able to live in a country that is not at war and that is not subjected to devastating natural disasters as is experienced in many parts of the world.

God is ever faithful, and even when life throws a curveball our way, the Lord strengthens us and gets us through whatever the hurdle may be. So let us spare a moment and give thanks to God with grateful hearts for always being with us, even when we’re not conscious of His presence.

Scripture reminds us that His name is “Emmanuel”, meaning, “God is with us.”

Expression of thanks
Since 2019 Mr. Graham Garland has given very generously of his time and skills towards compiling, editing, printing and distributing the Parish Newsletter. As his commitments (together with demands on his time and skills) to serving in other groups and organisations such as Diocesan Council and Mothers’ Union have grown, Graham has made the decision to give up his responsibility with respect to the newsletter. As Select Vestry and as members of Kinneigh Union we would like to express our most sincere thanks and appreciation to Graham for all he has put into ensuring that we regularly received a parish newsletter. Thanks also to Marjorie for her support to Graham in his service and ministry to us all through the newsletter.

Our Harvest Service with Holy Communion will be held at Ballymoney Church on Sunday 24th September at 11:00am. Refreshments will be served in St. Paul’s Hall thereafter. The collection taken will be in aid of both community and Christian organisations such as Air ambulance, Cancer Research, Christian Aid, The Bishop’s Pastoral Fund, etc. At the end of the year the Select Vestry will allocate the funds to all the agreed beneficiaries. If you are not able to attend our service but would still like to make a donation, please contact our treasurer, Mr. Graham Garland. Please bring your own camping chair if you have one, otherwise seating will be provided.

Baptism
On Sunday 20th August we were honoured and blessed to partake in the christening service of baby Penelope Walsh at St. Bartholomew’s Church, Kinneigh. We thank God that her parents have decided to have her baptised as God’s child and pray for them and Penelope’s godparents as they begin this journey with her.

Confirmation
On Wed. 13th Sept. at 8:00pm I will be having a meeting in St. Paul’s Parish Centre, Ballineen, for any candidates (6th class and above) and at least one of their parents, who would like to be confirmed next year. Please email me to confirm attendance.

Funeral
In this past month of August, we the people of Kinneigh Union have been deeply saddened by the loss of two of God’s children, Mrs. Shirley Buttimer and Mrs. Hilary Buttimer. On Sunday 13th August we laid Shirley to rest at a service in Christ Church, Kilmeen. A fortnight later, on Monday 28th August, Hilary was laid to rest in Kilmeen as well. We give thanks to God for the lives of these our sisters in Christ. We pray continue to pray for Shirley’s family: Francis her husband, Avril, Lorna and Colin her children and their spouses, together with Nathan her grandson and her siblings Barbara, Nicholas, Tommy and Billy, the wider family circle and friends. We also continue to keep in our prayers, Hilary’s family: Stephen her husband, and Brian and Ethan her sons, Diana her mother and her siblings, Roy, Rhoda and Darren and their spouses, all her nieces and nephews, her father-in-law, Richard and all her in-laws, the wider family circle and all her friends.

Kinneigh Mothers’ Union
On the 11th July the members went on an outing to Glengarriff and a visit to Garnish Island, which proved to be an enjoyable day. On the 12th September we will be having our opening service and Holy Communion in St. Paul’s Parish Centre, Ballineen at 8.30 pm. There will also be our usual sale for the Overseas Fund of the Mother’s Union. Everybody welcome. It is with great sadness that we report the death of Shirley Buttimer on the 9th August. Shirley had been a Mother’s Union member for many years and will be very much missed. We send our sincere condolences to the family and pray for them at this difficult time.
